Orthodox Detroit Outreach

The location where we serve in Southwest Detroit has been the site of an Orthodox Church since 1907, the oldest Orthodox church in the state of Michigan – Saints Peter & Paul parish. The parish is one of the very few remaining Orthodox churches in the city of Detroit. Many of the previously active Orthodox churches have since relocated to the suburbs.

Following decades of disinvestment and population loss since the 1960’s, the city of Detroit is experiencing a period of growth and renewal.

This revitalization is also occurring at Saints Peter & Paul Cathedral. In recent years our parish has gradually expanded, evidenced by our newly dedicated Mission Center.  The Mission Center is the primary location for all ODO activities. In the midst of this revitalization, there are still economic and social challenges for many in our surrounding neighborhood.

We serve here because we are needed here. We serve with an Orthodox ethos at an Orthodox parish in an ethnically diverse neighborhood. God has called us here and over the years we have built relationships here with the neighbors, serving all as Christ has commanded us.

Serving those in need with love, dignity, and respect, seeing in them the image of Christ.

Core Services & Initiatives:
  • Weekly Community Meal:  To date, over 10,000 meals have been served through this program.
  • 24/7 Outdoor Food Pantry: A neighborhood food kiosk and pantry allow those in need to access non-perishable food items around the clock.
  • Material Assistance: The outreach provides essential items such as clothing, hygiene kits, and seasonal supplies to the local population.
  • Community Garden: Known as the “Garden of Saints,” this space includes a lending library and serves as a place for fellowship and prayer in the neighborhood.
